Juan Gabriel Valdés is a Chilean political scientist, diplomat and former minister during the Eduardo Frei Ruiz Tagle presidency. Between 1973 and 1976 he studied political science at Princeton University in the United States, where he obtained a Ph.D. In 2014, Chilean President Michelle Bachelet appointed Valdés as Chilean Ambassador to the United States. Mr. Rodriguez is a Civil Engineer from the Catholic University of Chile with studies in Philosophy at the same University. He has done postgraduate studies in economics at the University of Oxford, St. Anthony´s College, Great Britain. He has been professor at the Engineering Faculty, Catholic University, in the areas of Project Appraisal and Technology Development, member of the board to several private companies en Chile and consultant for the Italian Petroleum Company (ENI) and United Nations organizations and Canada, in the area of communication and technology.Between 1985 and 1998, Mr. Rodríguez was Vice President for Logonet, based in California and MCI Systemhouse for Mexico and Latin America, companies both with operations on management and technology.Since 2000, as Director in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Chile, Ambassador Rodriguez has been in charge of the international negotiations for energy, science, technology and human capital, and responsible for the internationalization of national programs in the areas of innovation, research and development. He is also Executive Secretary of the Chile – California Plan, an initiative launched by the government in 2008 to develop an strategic bilateral relationship, and also coordinator in Chile for the Chile-Massachusetts Plan. Since 2009 Amb. Rodríguez has been in charge of the international negotiations for the installation and operation in Chile of the largest radio and optical telescopes (GMT, LSST, E-ELT, TAO, CCAT and ALMA).

Minister Counsellor Tagle is Consul General in Los Angeles since November 2014. He studied at the Law School of the Catholic University of Santiago and became a lawyer in1983. That same year he started his studies at the Diplomatic Academy “Andrés Bello”.During his diplomatic career, he has exerted duties at the Chilean Embassies to Lebanon,Italy, United Kingdom and Turkey, and to the Chilean Missions to the European Union(Brussels) and to the United Nations (New York). He was member of the Cabinet of thePresident of the 67th General Assembly of the United Nations.At the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, he has performed duties at the Directorates ofBilateral Affairs, Multilateral Affairs, Legal Affairs, and at the Directorate General forMultilateral and Global Affairs, where he was Head of the Security Council Unit fromOctober 2013 until his appointment as Consul General to Los Angeles.

Public Administrator with a Master’s Degree in International Humanitarian Law and Penal Justice from the University Obertat de Cataluña of Barcelona, as well as a Technical Specialist Degree on the European Union Organization from the same institution. Among his previous postings are Sweden (2010-2015), Germany (2003-2007), Denmark (1996-2001), Malaysia (1992-1993), Australia (1989-1991), Kenya (1983-1987) and Bolivia (1982-83). At the Ministry of Foreign Affairs he’s worked at Consular Affairs (1980-81), at the Diplomatic Academy (1987-1988), the Asia/Pacific Directorate (1994-1995), the European Affairs Directorate (2001-2002), the South American Directorate (2008-2010) and finally the Middle East and African Directorate (2015-2016). Furthermore, he has represented Chile as a delegate at various international conferences. He speaks fluent English and French, and conversational German. He has been decorated by the governments of Denmark and Poland, as well as by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs with the Service Medal for time served at 20, 30, and 35 year career.
