Chile-California Council at the IX Summit of the Americas.

Matías Alcalde, Executive Director of the Chile-California Council, meets with authorities, leaders and civil society from the Americas at the IX Summit of the Americas.

Los Angeles, California, was chosen as the official venue for the IX Summit of the Americas and welcomed leaders from across the Western Hemisphere during the week of June 6-10. California is recognized for its global leadership in climate policies, economic resilience, citizen security and other issues related to the themes of the Summit and the official theme of this year; “Building a sustainable, resilient and equitable future”.

Matías Alcalde, CCC Executive Director, represented the Council in several meetings and events to present its climate action-oriented agenda, explore possible collaborations and connect the innovation poles of Chile and California, to enable the economies of the future between the public sector and private.

Below, a brief summary of the main milestones of the participation of the Chile-California Council in the Summit of the Americas:

  1. Participation in the Summit of CEOs of the Americas, together with business leaders and authorities, among them, the President of the CPC, Juan Sutil, the Vice President of ACECH Jorge Welch, the Ambassador of Chile in the United States, Juan Gabriel Valdés, the General Manager from AmCham Chile, Paula Estévez, among others, being excellent instances to present the next CCC project called “Booster Innovation Center (BIC)”. It was an instance to discuss the need to connect the innovation poles of Chile and California, their economies and markets, to the social/climatic contexts.

  1. The Chile-California Council supported the Strategic Planning Directorate (DIPLANE) of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Chile, in the strategic planning and generation of the document “Americas for the Protection of the Ocean”. On Thursday, June 9, within the framework of the IX CEO Summit of the Americas, Chile led the launch of the coalition of 9 countries called “Americas for the Protection of the Ocean”. The Council has worked on this visualization since COP 25 in Madrid, through its presentation “Focus on the Coast: Connecting the Pacific Biological Corridor”. In that instance, the visualization of the “Pacific Ocean Biological Corridor” was presented, together with a strategy that considers the foundations of California’s successful coastal-marine governance and administration, to bring them to the reality and idiosyncrasy of Chile.

  1. The Council coordinated a bilateral agreement between the governments of Chile and California, to increase mutual collaboration and ambition in the face of the urgent climate battle. The Governor of California, Gavin Newsom together with Lauren Sanchez, Senior Climate Advisor of the California Government Office, The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Chile, Antonia Urrejola, Ambassador Juan Gabriel Valdés, among other authorities from Chile and California, participated in this instance to strengthen the Chile-California Plan and take it to new horizons, which allow renewing the patrimonial relationship existing between Chile and California. The prospects for the Chile-California Plan are promising. There is a solid installed capacity in the CCC to continue developing the Chile-California Plan with a climate action-driven holistic agenda.

Bilateral meeting attended by the Governor of California, Gavin Newsom, the Senior Climate Advisor of the Office of the Governor of California Gavin Newsom, Lauren Sanchez, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Chile, Antonia Urrejola, Ambassador Juan Gabriel Valdés, among others authorities, to strengthen the “Chile-California Plan” operated by the Chile-California Council for 10 years.
  1. The council participated in the Civil Society Forum, in Consular activities together with the Consul General Mr. Jorge Valdés, among other instances of the Summit to connect and dialogue with the community of the Americas.
